“Ben is what I call a gamer,” Engram said. “He looks good in practice, but I think when the lights click on, some people have that ability to show up and shine. And I think he’s one of those guys.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that second-round DE Quentin Groves has been a hit in his first training camp. Epitomizing his strong camp was his domination of veteran OT Khalif Barnes in the Oklahoma drill.

Chris Gray: Sudden retirement due to back injury in practice

Veteran offensive lineman Chris Gray just announced his retirement during an impromptu – and at times emotional – news conference.

Gray, 38 and entering his 16th NFL season, was told Saturday by the Seahawks team doctors that the back injury he suffered on the second day of training camp could lead to paralysis if he attempted to play anymore.

"When they told me Saturday, it hit me like a ton of bricks," Gray said. "My thought was rehab for another week or two, because I've been a guy who plays through pain and fights through injuries.

"When they told me I was done, it was pretty hard for the first day and half. But it's kind of a blessing. It's kind of a warning shot."

Gray was placed on injured reserve and told by the team that it will honor his contract this season. Defensive tackle Kevin Brown was signed to fill Gray's roster spot.

After signing with the Seahawks in 1998, Gray set a franchise record by starting 121 consecutive regular-season games. He was scheduled to be a backup this season.

Takeo Spikes: Lions consider him for the "Sam" position

With LB Jordon Dizon missing the first few practices of training camp while waiting to sign a contract and the team looking at free agent Takeo Spikes possibly to add to the mix, there are some faces who could be added to the starting lineup. As it stands now, Sims starts on the weak side, Paris Lenon is in the middle and possibly Alex Lewis on the strong side. But Dizon’s arrival and emergence could mean Lenon — or Spikes, if he’s offered a contract — may end up occupying the “Sam” position. Lewis is considered more of a special-teamer than a two-down linebacker. The “Sam” ’backer typically comes off the field in the Lions’ nickel defense, so finding a more sturdy, run-stopping player would appear to be the coaches’ biggest aim"

Jay Ratliff: May move from NT to DE for Cowboys

Ratliff is being moved to defensive end, for now, to give the defensive line some different looks.

Marcus Spears has practiced some as the nose guard and Tank Johnson's emergence has been a real positive to the defensive line.

Ratliff is concerned about the move because he's switched positions for a long time. In his sophomore year at Auburn, Ratliff moved from tight end to defensive end.

Then his senior season he moved from end to tackle.

In the pros, he was drafted in the seventh round to play end.

Last season, he took over for an injured Jason Ferguson and made the Cowboys give him a long-term deal with his solid play at nose tackle.

Now the team is thinking of moving him again, so it's pretty understandable where he's coming from. But when you think about it, the Cowboys are pretty much better with a rotation

News - Bengals waive Irons - Cincinnati Bengals: "The Bengals waived second-rounder Kenny Irons on Friday after he failed their physical, indicating just how difficult his rehab from reconstructive knee surgery has been.
His future with the club and in the NFL remains murky. The Bengals needed Irons' spot to get to the 80-man limit for training camp and they now have 80 players listed on their roster including unsigned draft picks.

Prechae Rodriguez: TiCats like his big hands

he Tiger-Cats have some gifted receivers with big grab bags. Chris Bauman has a large set of mitts, while Ernest Jackson has nice-sized pocket pals, as does Willie Ponder.

But rookie receiver and former Auburn basketball star Prechae Rodriguez has a set of lacrosse pockets.

"Prechae has big hands," Goldman said, though he has seen bigger. "I coached a guy at Syracuse named Johnnie Morant who played with the Oakland Raiders for a few years. He had absolutely huge hands. (Former NFL receiver) Qadry Ismail had huge hands."

While hand size matters so does softness, Goldman said.

"I think some guys catch the ball more naturally than others. And, with soft hands, you can see as they catch it there's just a little bit of a give in their hands ... You'll never hear the catch with a guy with soft hands," Goldman said.

Rodriguez, whose first name is pronounced Pree-shay, said there is no question big hands are advantageous for receivers.

"I try to catch the ball away from my body. I try to catch the ball with my hands."

Rodriguez said he doesn't just have big hands. He has baby-bottom-soft ones, as well. He even has a name for them.

"Most definitely. Pillow soft hands. I can catch egg shells, man."

Big soft paws are important, but so is concentration and focus.

"Look the ball in with your eyes and catch it with your hands," he said.

Jay Ratliff: Still something to prove

NT Jay Ratliff's relentless drive played a major role in earning the former seventh-round pick an $8 million signing bonus. Don't expect his motor to slow down just because his bank account has added a zero.

"Matter of fact, it makes me hungrier," Ratliff said during a break from teaching high school players swim and rip moves at a Reebok STACK Elite Tour clinic Thursday evening. "I came in with a chip on my shoulder, trying to prove that I belong in this league. Now it's pretty much the same thing, but I'm trying to prove that [the contract] wasn't a mistake."

The 6-4, 298-pound Ratliff, who moved from DE when Jason Ferguson went down with a season-ending injury in the opener, doesn't have a prototypical frame for a 3-4 nose tackle. But he's a good fit in Wade Phillips' one-gap scheme, which requires linemen to use their quickness to disrupt plays instead of simply occupying blockers. That was clear before Tank Johnson played a down for Dallas.

The proof is in Ratliff's performance. He anchored a run defense that ranked sixth in the league, made three sacks and led the team's defensive linemen in QB pressures (15), passes defensed (four) and fumble recoveries (two).

Oh, and he's probably the best nose tackle in the league at dropping back into pass coverage (and the only one who played safety in high school). Crazy as it sounds, Ratliff's ability to cover underneath zones is a valuable tool in Phillips' blitz packages.

Ratliff's combination of athleticism and attitude -- he lives by the motto his minister father hammered into his head: "Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might" -- convinced Jerry to ensure that he'd be a key cog in the Cowboys' defense for years.

Becoming a multimillionaire didn't change Ratliff as a person, other than giving him the means to really spoil his two daughters. But it did alter his motivation.

He's answered the questions about whether he could play in the NFL. Now he's determined to prove that it wasn't a fluke

These two players were selected with a specific purpose in mind, to take the Jaguars defense over the top and supply a pass rush, something they couldn’t do consistently a year ago.

“We impressed upon them the importance of doing the right things on the field and in the community,” said Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio. “We have a really good football team, the community is excited, and we want them to do their part.”

Fortunately for the two Jaguars top draft picks, defensive end is a much better position to learn and contribute right away that a position such as quarterback or the secondary. Jack Del Rio expects them to settle in right away--

Three issues that won't impact 49ers' win-loss record: "1, Ted Linebacker: This is the guy who lines up next to Patrick Willis at strong inside linebacker. It's about the only starting position on defense that is up for grabs. Dontarrious Thomas, Jeff Ulbrich, Brandon Moore and Larry Grant are among the candidates for this job.
The 49ers admit they don't have a true 'ted' linebacker on the roster. This is the spot that Derek Smith played last season. Although Smith struggled last season, the 49ers' run defense still ranked fifth in the NFL in yards-allowed-per-attempt. Smith's shortcomings - mostly his lack of speed - were exposed in pass coverage. Toward the end of the season, he was playing almost exclusively on first downs.
There has been a lot of talk about the 49ers pursuing a 'ted' linebacker, such as Takeo Spikes or Jeremiah Trotter. Both veterans have visited the 49ers. Neither has signed a contract, and the club's preference is Spikes over Trotter. But nothing appears imminent.
The 49ers do not need a big name at this position. This person's job is to take on blockers and make things easier for Willis. This player can do a fine job and remain anonymous. Guys like Larry Foote (Steelers), Matt Wilhelm (Chargers) and Bart Scott (Ravens) help their teams a lot without drawing much attention.
This position is a lot more about mindset than production. Although the 'ted' linebacker will invariably record a lot of tackles in a 3-4 scheme, his main duty is to free up Willis to roam sideline-to-sideline to make tackles.
That's why I believe this position is not a difference-maker. As long as the person who wins the job does not blow his assignments - nor gets too greedy - the 49ers' defense will be just fine."

It’s pretty tough to know if the Patriots were interested in moving up for sure since Bill Belichick doesn’t normally let us know about all the individual moves that don’t wind up being made. But the Patriots began the day 17 spots away from where Jacksonville picked Groves, which is a pretty sizable gap to close. Clearly with the three third-round picks at their disposal the Patriots had the necessary ammunition to move up, but at what price? Instead they chose to add a pick for next year and moved down, which seems like a pretty solid trade at this point. I really liked Groves on tape and I believe he’ll be a nice addition to the Jags pass rush. But I also think Thomas will be a much more noticeable presence on the pass rush this season while playing almost exclusively on the outside, assuming that’s where he winds up. Thomas has the size and speed to cause a lot of trouble off the edge, as he did in the Super Bowl. With a year in the system under his belt, I expect him to be much more productive.

Carnell Williams: July decision for training camp practice clearance

In the end, it may not be Williams' decision. Tampa Bay has four other running backs under contract, and that doesn't include seventh-round draft choice Cory Boyd and rookie free-agent Clifton Smith.

Still, Williams is working hard to make it a tough decision for the Bucs.

'We're going to make a decision in July,' Williams said of whether he will be cleared to practice or placed on the 'physically unable to perform' list. 'I'm not sure. I'm just going to keep working and see what happens.

'Me personally, once training camp starts, I'll be in training camp,' he said. 'I will be on the field to do some things. I feel by July, I definitely should be ready to play ball.'"

That didn’t seem to be the case during the first session yesterday, as Wilhite broke on a ball, stepping in front of a receiver to pick off a pass. Later in the day, in the second session, he easily made the play of the day. He was marking a tryout receiver during 7-on-7 drills down the left side of the field. As the ball arrived, he perfectly timed his move, tipping the ball away, then apparently catching it while on his back.

“We thought (Harvey) could play left or right defensive end. I think the way it’s worked out, he’d be best-suited on the left side and Groves on the right side,” Smith said."

It could be one of the returning core players -- backup linebackers Will Herring and Lance Laury; backup defensive backs Jordan Babineaux, Mike Green and Josh Wilson; backup receivers Ben Obomanu, Courtney Taylor and Will Heller.
'There will be guys to replace them, I just don't know who it will be yet,' DeHaven said.
It just needs to be somebody. For the good of the team, as well as DeHaven's peace of mind.

Of the visit, Gadson said, 'That's a moment I'll always remember because they feel like my teammates and my teammates were there at Walter Reed. I feel like I had a little to do with that.'"

Scout.com: Patriots Part Ways With Two Players: "FOXBORO -- The New England Patriots made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday. The team released cornerback Tim Mixon and linebacker T.J. Slaughter. The moves were made after the team selected players at both positions over the weekend through the NFL Draft.
The Patriots released Cal cornerback Tim Mixon yesterday after adding more players at the position via the Draft and free agency. The 5-foot-9, 184-pound defender was part of the team's practice squad in 2007. The former California product joined New England in 2007 after short stays with the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears.
Mixon was a longshot to make the final roster as the Patriots build depth around him. New England added defensive backs Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster and Lewis Sanders via free agency. The team selected another pair of defensive backs via the Draft; Terrence Wheatley (Colorado) and Jonathan Wilhite (Auburn).
Mixon did not participate in any regular season or postseason games for the Patriots."

Brock told AuburnSports.com on Tuesday that he has agreed to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, choosing the team over another offer from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He plans to sign today and report to rookie training camp the weekend of May 10.
Tight end Cole Bennett signed with the Houston Texans, fullback Carl Stewart with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and defensive tackle Josh Thompson with the St. Louis Rams.
Wide receiver Prechae Rodriguez will try out with the the N.Y. Jets on May 2.
Five former Auburn players went in last weekend's draft.
They include: defensive end/linebacker Quentin Groves, second round and 52nd overall by Jacksonville; cornerback Pat Lee, second round and 60th overall by Green Bay; defensive tackle Pat Sims, third round and 77th overall by Cincinnati; cornerback Jonathan Wilhite, fourth round and 129th overall by New England Patriots; and offensive tackle King Dunlap, seventh round and 230th overall to Philadelphia"
