Quentin Groves & Takeo Spikes: Competing to fill 49'ers OLB need? Either way, Auburn players fit the bill

If the 49ers choose to go with a linebacker instead, McCloughan said the team is in search of a replacement for Derek Smith, a longtime starter at inside linebacker.

Possibilities at No. 29 could include Tennessee's Jerod Mayo, who ran an impressive 4.54-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. Dan Connor of Penn State is coming off a season in which he was credited with a career-high 145 tackles.

Asked about Quentin Groves, the Auburn outside linebacker the 49ers brought in for a workout earlier this month, McCloughan said: "Size, speed - he's been very productive in the SEC for 3 1/2 years."

• McCloughan said the 49ers are more likely to trade out of the first round than trade up. Either way, the phone is already ringing.

The NFL's push for a more efficient draft means teams are laying the groundwork for trades earlier than ever. There are only 10 minutes between picks this year instead of 15.

McCloughan said he had talked to four teams already and expected to hear from four more by the end of the day. "There's been more contact this year than ever," he said.

• Larry Allen's status remains a mystery. The longtime offensive guard has not made it known whether he will return to the team or retire. A starting job with the 49ers is not assured, but McCloughan said, "If Larry Allen wants to be a 49er, he'll be a 49er. - There's no bad blood."

• Regarding this year's receiver class, McCloughan said: "The quality's good, but I wouldn't say as good as the last two years up top. In the mid-rounds, it's good. You have a chance to get one or two good football players at the receiver position in the mid-rounds."

Discussions with free-agent outside linebacker Takeo Spikes, 31, are on hold until after the weekend. McCloughan said, "We're sitting tight and seeing where the draft goes." Spikes is apparently doing the same, waiting to see which teams still need starters after draft day.

I follow the team pretty closely and my reaction was, “who in the heck is that guy?” A quick internet search found that Aromashodu spent time with the Houston Texans and went to college at Auburn. Most shockingly, when the divisional playoff game met its late stages, it was “that guy” and not Marvin Harrison who was on the field. Aromashodu didn’t show me a whole lot during the season, but that’s probably because he was signed in November. With a full off-season under his belt, maybe he’ll be more of a contributor."

Remember the days when the defensive line was the pride of the franchise?
Those days are gone. The Panthers barely mustered a pass rush last season and since have bid farewell to Kris Jenkins and -- at least for now -- to long-time starting defensive end Mike Rucker, an unrestricted free agent who remains unsigned.
Carolina is officially in rebuilding mode here and needs an end and a tackle in the draft.

1. Take The Best Player
After the first day of that draft when the Bengals had taken Smith, Chad Johnson and tight end Sean Brewer (more on that later), two things happened before the Bengals draft room broke up for the night. As they prepared for rounds four to seven the next day, offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski phoned Yarber to get his impressions on Houshmandzadeh as the Bengals lined up their board with the remaining players.

The top player on the list was Auburn running back Rudi Johnson and so the Bengals took him with one of Sunday's first picks in the fourth round even though they took running back Curtis Keaton in the fourth round the year before, they would sign Corey Dillon to a long-term deal a month later, and Brandon Bennett had successfully returned from reconstructive knee surgery.

'We had solid third-round grades on Rudi and we were surprised he was still there,' says director of football operations Jim Lippincott. 'Yeah, we had backs, but you were talking about a guy from a creativity standpoint that had all the things you're looking for in a, NFL running back: Strong. Lateral snap. Great vision. Later, that allowed us to trade Keaton for another pick.'The one thing that was missing, of course, was speed and that's why Johnson was sitting at the top of the fourth and his Auburn teammate, Heath Evans, had gone in the third round to Seattle.

"That surprised me from a football player standpoint," says Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson. "Heath ran faster. But Rudi played fast. He was fast on tape."

Evans is still in the league, but only as a role player. Of the 10 backs drafted ahead of Johnson, only future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson (the fifth pick in the draft) has scored more touchdowns and only Tomlinson and Travis Henry (second round) have more career carries and yards.

Another knock on Johnson was he played just one year of Division I ball before coming out early. But a big selling point to the Bengals was the kind of year he had.

"Dominant. Player of the Year in the SEC," Lippincott says, and Anderson says, "If you're not moving in the SEC, you're a tattoo."

And Anderson saw something else that wasn't in the stats but that he thinks will revive Johnson's career this year:

"He's a very prideful man," he says."

Although Groves isn't as big and as 'pretty looking' as Gholston, the talk among NFL observers is that Groves is more fluid, which gives him more versatility. Gholston is viewed primarily as a 3-4 rush linebacker who could also be used as a 4-3 end, but he isn't ideal for that latter spot and would also struggle to play linebacker in a 4-3. According to Scout.com, Auburn recruiting was rated No. 11 in 2002, No. 16 in 2003 and No. 31 in 2004. I couldn't find a full rankings list for 2000 and 2001, but I did find a Sports Illustrated top 10 lists for those two years that did not include Auburn. So, as best I can tell, that team did not include a single top 10 recruiting class.
What it did include was four players - Jason Campbell, Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown and Carlos Rogers - who were drafted in the first round the following spring. It included Marcus McNeil, who would play in the Pro Bowl as a rookie after being drafted in the second round, and Ben Grubbs, who was a first-round pick in 2007. If Quentin Groves goes in the first round this year, that will be another one. Numerous other players from that team are on NFL rosters. Quentin Groves: Minor Surgery Not Effecting Draft Status

His agent, Sean Kiernan, explains why:
”An (electrocardiogram) taken seven days after surgery shows he is completely normal. He no longer has (the syndrome), and there are no long-term ramifications to this condition.”
Sounds good to me, but then again, I’m not a doctor.
Groves seems to be a perfect fit for San Francisco at pick twenty-nine. Tully Banta-Cain, the current weak-side starter, is no longer liked by the organization, and in result, they would like to cut or bench him. Groves would allow this to happen.
The all-time Auburn sack leader can also play defensive end, but they would use him at Cain’s spot. He’s a very big guy, but excels at rushing the passer. This is what the 49er’s defense badly needs, even with the signing of Justin Smith.
So, you’d definetely have the think that Groves is whom San Francisco wants for now, especially if they think he’s fully healthy. They’ll also look at some receiver options, as DeSean Jackson and Malcolm Kelley will be visiting. However, look for them to go the defensive route instead, as they can get more value by picking a receiver in round number two."

The Wonderlic test is a 12 minute, 50 question exam that NFL teams use to measure intelligence and other decision making factors. But what does this have to do with running and throwing anyway?

NFL scouts will tell you that this score can measure a player's quick decision making ability, while others feel it may be out-dated for today's player. According to the experts the average score for a football player is around 20 and a score of 10 means you're barely literate.

It's too early to examine the 2007 class of QB's, but a quick note, Brady Quinn of the Cleveland Browns scored a 29 and JaMarcus Russell scored a 24. Both are above the average but haven't played enough yet to evaluate.

Just look at some of the other scores from the past and how the player has performed on the field: Matt Leinart and Kellen Clemens both scored a 35, both scores are higher then the average score of a Chemist and both have performed poorly on the field. Compare those two to Jay Cutler, who scored a 26 and has been head and shoulders above that QB class.

From the 2005 class, Alex Smith scored a 40, Aaron Rodgers a 35, and Kyle Orton a 26. With the exception of Rodgers, both Smith and Orton have not lived up to expectations. We'll find out how Rodgers does for Green Bay as he takes over for the retired Brett Favre.

From the same QB class Jason Campbell of the Redskins scored a 23 and Derek Anderson of the Browns scored a 19. Both have been the best in their respective class with Anderson exceeding anyone's wildest expectations.

From the 2004 testing Eli Manning had the highest at 39 while J.P. Losman and Matt Schaub both scored a 31. But the lowest score of all the top QB's was Ben Roethlisberger at 25. While Eli just won the Super Bowl, the best player from this draft has easily been Big Ben.

Just to prove that this score is not the end-all-be-all for QB's, the three headed monster of Rex Grossman, Brooks Bollinger, and Kyle Boller all scored higher then Carson Palmer. The point is obvious, while this test may move some players up the draft board, it shouldn't keep the scouts from doing what they do best.

Quarterback Carson Palmer's 575 passes were behind only Drew Brees and Tom Brady, his 20 interceptions were a career high, and his 86.7 passer rating was his lowest since his first season. The Bengals scored the 11th-most points in the league, but hardly any in the clutch because they were only 23rd in red-zone touchdowns.
With running back Kenny Irons struggling to come back from reconstructive knee surgery and unable to be on the field in May and June and running back Chris Perry not knowing yet if he can return to the field, there is a premium on Rudi Johnson rebounding from a subpar season hampered by a lingering hamstring problem.
'We got away from things we need to do offensively, which will enhance Rudi,' Lewis said. 'You play more physically; you put things together and do it. We ran the ball for 17 yards at Buffalo. That doesn't work. We can't run the ball and win the game at San Francisco. Those things are burrs under your saddle.'
Johnson's yards per carry average has dipped to 3.5 since 2006, but that is a stretch when the Bengals have had 12 different starting offensive line combinations because of injuries, including six last year."
