Draft Class 2008: Every Auburn Player Got To The NFL

Brock agrees to terms with Falcons - Tracking the Tigers - al.com: "At least 10 Auburn players from last season's Auburn team will report to NFL camps. Quentin Groves, Pat Lee, Pat Sims, Jonathan Wilhite and King Dunlap were chosen in the draft. Brock, Carl Stewart, Prechae Rodriguez, Josh Thompson and Cole Bennett agreed to free-agent deals"

Jonathan Wilhite: Patriots open up roster spot

Scout.com: Patriots Part Ways With Two Players: "FOXBORO -- The New England Patriots made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday. The team released cornerback Tim Mixon and linebacker T.J. Slaughter. The moves were made after the team selected players at both positions over the weekend through the NFL Draft.
The Patriots released Cal cornerback Tim Mixon yesterday after adding more players at the position via the Draft and free agency. The 5-foot-9, 184-pound defender was part of the team's practice squad in 2007. The former California product joined New England in 2007 after short stays with the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears.
Mixon was a longshot to make the final roster as the Patriots build depth around him. New England added defensive backs Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster and Lewis Sanders via free agency. The team selected another pair of defensive backs via the Draft; Terrence Wheatley (Colorado) and Jonathan Wilhite (Auburn).
Mixon did not participate in any regular season or postseason games for the Patriots."

Eric Brock: Signs w/Falcons (includes where all 9 are going)

The Anniston Star » Auburn's Brock joins Falcons: "Safety Eric Brock became the fourth former Auburn player to go the free agent route to the NFL since last weekend's draft.

Eric Brock: Signs Free Agent Deal -Way to go Eric!!

"Eric Brock has become the fourth former Auburn player to accept a free agent contract this week"

Draft Class 2008: High school recruiting rankings don't equivelate to producing NFL players

What the NFL Draft tells us about recruiting rankings - Segrest on the SEC - al.com: "Mississippi State was ranked ninth in 2003 and Alabama was ranked 15th in 2004, yet both programs failed to produce a draftee over the weekend"

Draft Class 2008: Auburn consistently putting players into the NFL; Alabama hasn't had a 1st rounder in 8 straight years

AU streak lacks aura of authority- al.com: "Cecil Hurt of The Tuscaloosa News, who pointed out that this weekend's NFL draft will mark the eighth straight year that no Alabama player will have been selected in the first round.
In 2005, Auburn had three of the first nine picks and four in the first round. One of the obvious conclusions to this observation is consistency"

Carl Stewart, Carnell Williams: Reuniting in Tampa Bay

Carl Stewart signs with Tampa Bay : Football : Knoxville News Sentinel: "Carl Stewart, the former Maryville High School star, signed Sunday night with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent.
Stewart played mostly at fullback the past four years at Auburn. He rushed 20 times for 49 yards and two touchdowns in 2007. He also caught 14 passes for 214 yards.
Tampa Bay has a number of tailbacks, including Earnest Graham, Warrick Dunn, Cadillac Williams, Michael Bennett and former Alabama back Ken Darby.
The two fullbacks on the roster are B.J. Askew and Bryon Storer. Askew played mostly special teams. Storer, who caught two passes in nine games, made the team after signing as an undrafted free agent last May.
The Bucs also drafted Cory Boyd of South Carolina in the seventh round"

Auburn Tigers Football -- AuburnSports.com: "Carl Stewart, who is headed to Tampa Bay"

Draft Class 2008: Alabama doesn't have "It" factor

Draft drought: Tide shut out- al.com: "'We're kind of in shock, really,' said Ed Rowan, the agent for both Gilberry and Hall.
Indeed, it's the first time since 1970 that Alabama got shut out of the draft.
'We didn't have that 'it' factor, I guess, that excitement factor that made teams want to turn your card in,' Gilberry said"

Josh Thompson, Prechae Rodriguez, Cole Bennett: Signed with St. Louis, NY Jets, Houston

Thompson, Rodriguez, Bennett to get their shots in the NFL - Tracking the Tigers - al.com: "Three Auburn players who went undrafted have agreed to free agent deals with NFL teams.
Nose guard Josh Thompson will go to camp with the St. Louis Rams, wide receiver Prechae Rodriguez with the New York Jets and tight end Cole Bennett with the Houston Texans.
There is no word yet on fullback Carl Stewart or safety Eric Brock.
Five Auburn players were chosen in the NFL draft."

Pat Lee: Fits well with Green Bay's defensive philosophy

Scout.com: Round 2: Green Bay Selects CB Patrick Lee: "Green Bay was expected to select a cornerback to bolster depth behind Al Harris and Charles Woodson. Lee played mainly press coverage at Auburn, so he will fit well in Green Bay's defense, which often places the cornerbacks in one-on-one, bump-and-run coverage. - Todd Korth, Packer Report"

Jonathan Wilhite: Will need to compete well to get playing time/roster spot

Jonathan Wilhite analysis - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com: "Of all positions, cornerback is shaping up to feature the most intense competition for playing time and roster spots. Add fourth-round draft choice Jonathan Wilhite of Auburn to the mix.
At 5-foot-9 1/2 and 185 pounds, Wilhite is considered undersized for the position, although his movements are said to be fluid and he excels in zone coverage, which is often what the Patriots play. He's played outside and in the slot.
In the early going, Wilhite would seemingly be competing for a job in sub packages. Making a mark on special teams will also be important for him to earn a roster spot.
He joins a group that includes the following players at the top of the cornerback depth chart (in alphabetical order):
Fernando Bryant
Ellis Hobbs
Mike Richardson
Lewis Sanders
Jason Webster
Terrence Wheatley
Safety Brandon Meriweather is also an option at the position. Tim Mixon and Antwain Spann are longer shots to contribute at cornerback"

Draft Flashback: We had four defensive picks in 1989

Ledger-Enquirer.com | 04/28/2008 | Several Tigers drafted: "The last time Auburn had at least four defensive players drafted was the 1989 draft with defensive tackles Brian Smith, Benjie Roland and Tracey Rocker, end Ron Stallworth and safety Carlo Cheattom."

Draft Class 2008: Worst draft for Alabama since 1970

Bengals sold on potential of Auburn's Sims- al.com: "The University of Alabama didn't have a player drafted this year for the first time since 1970 and for just the second time in school history"

Jonathan Wilhite: Nice 4th round surprise for the Patriots

Fourth Round Selection: Jonathan Wilhite CB Auburn « Raks New England Sports Blog: "Strengths:
Good athleticism…Great speed and quickness…Excellent feet…He has fluid hips to turn and run in coverage…Pretty tough and physical..Has good body control…Very aggressive with a terrific motor…Has a lot of experience against elite competition.
Weaknesses:
Average height and bulk…Poor awareness…Lacks a burst to close..Sub par hands and ball skills…Doesn’t make many big plays…Not a great tackler…Work ethic has been questioned..Needs technique work…Has durability issues…Upside is limited.
Notes:
Transfer from Butler County Junior College…A three-year starter in the SEC…Was overshadowed by David Irons and Patrick Lee during his college career but he’s a fine pro prospect in his own right…He probably profiles as more of a nickel or dime type at the next level…Underrated player who could be a nice late round surprise"

Pat Sims: 3rd rounder to Bengals

The Enquirer - Grading the Bengals' draft: "On the defensive line, the Bengals chose not to try to trade up to get Southern Cal's Sedrick Ellis, who instead went to New Orleans - which traded up from No. 10 overall - to the seventh slot. Instead, the Bengals added Auburn's Pat Sims in the third round and Fresno State's mammoth Jason Shirley (329 pounds) in the fifth round. Sims has pass-rush talent in the middle"

Quentin Groves: Job One -Sack Peyton Manning

Carroll County Times: Westminster, Maryland: "- Jacksonville Jaguars: They never hid their desire for DE Derrick Harvey and moved from the 26th spot in the first round to eighth to get him. Harvey looks like the most complete of the DEs, so this pick, even at the cost, ought to be success. Same idea in moving up to get Quentin Groves. Want to knock off the Colts? Then find a way to rush Peyton Manning"

Pat Lee: Paul Needell's NFL DRAFT GRADES

Paul Needell's NFL DRAFT GRADES- NJ.com: "Packers -- B
QB Aaron Rodgers can't be happy with the pick of Brian Brohm in Round 2, but Cheeseheads should be. Brohm will eventually be the real replacement for Brett Favre. WR Jordy Nelson was the first of three No. 2 picks. We had Brohm and CB Patrick Lee -- the Pack's third No. 2 -- rated higher so it worked out fine for GM Ted Thompson, who added another QB, Matt Flynn, in Round 7."

Draft Class 2008: Auburn Skunks Alabama 5:0

Auburn gets 5 in the NFL Draft… Alabama gets 3 in the Supplemental Draft - Mobile Alabama News AL Pensacola Florida News FL: "Quinton Groves and Patrick Lee picked up in Day one. Defensive tackle, Pat Sims, went in the 3rd round to the Cincinnati Bengals. He was the defensive MVP of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Defensive Back, Jonathan Wilhite was selected in the 4th round by the New England Patriots.
And Offensive Lineman, King Dunlap was chosen by Philadelphia in the 7th round. In all, 5 Tigers chosen.
For Alabama, no players selected in the in 7th rounds, but in the Supplemental Draft it was a different story. Bay Minnett native, Wallace Gilberry got the call late Sunday night to play for the New York Giants. Cornerback, Simeon Castille and Justin Britt was picked up by Cincinnati"

Draft Class 2008: Three 2nd day players taken & seven hoping for free agent contracts

Sims, Wilhite, Dunlap taken on final day of draft | Opelika-Auburn News: "Several former AU players weren’t selected during the seven-round draft. Those players — a group that includes fullback Carl Stewart, tight end Cole Bennett, wideout Prechae Rodriguez, noseguard Josh Thompson and linebacker Eric Brock — are eligible to be signed to free-agent contracts immediately after the end of the draft."

David Irons: In 4-way battle for starting CB

Falcons took low-key approach to rebuilding | ajc.com: "Cornerbacks
Jackson's addition makes for an interesting battle for playing time among Von Hutchins, Brent Grimes and possibly David Irons, a special teams standout. DeAngelo Hall must be replaced on the left side, opposite Chris Houston."

Pat Sims: Drafted by Bengals

The Enquirer - Bengals draft DT Sims in Round 3: "He’s a very, very strong man,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said this morning. “He had to grow up and come through some things. We’re happy with that selection.”

In 2007, Sims played seven games with a cast on his left hand after breaking a bone in his middle finger in practice.

“In the Mississippi State game, he made play after play after play with that cast on his hand,” said Bengals defensive line coach Jay Hayes, who came away impressed with Sims’ toughness.

Sims is the youngest of 10 children. In addition to the loss of his half-sister, one of his brothers died, as well.

His father is a retired longshoreman who still holds jobs building houses and as a janitor.

“He’s always working,” Sims said of his father. “He can’t sit still.”

Movement describes Sims’ game, as well.

“I can bring penetration (as a pass rusher),” Sims said. “I can stop the run"

Quentin Groves & Patrick Lee: Groves to Jags, Lee to Packers

Groves chosen by Jaguars, Lee by Packers in second round (Updated) - Tracking the Tigers - al.com: "Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 21st pick of the second round of the NFL draft and the 52nd pick overall Saturday. Cornerback Pat Lee went to the Green Bay Packers as the 29th pick in the second round and the 60th pick overall."

Draft Class 2008: FYI, Phillip Marshall's, AU Beat Writer, Take on the draft

DE Quentin Groves: Second round. Could go late in the first round, but second round is more likely.

DB Pat Lee: Second round. Made a big impression at the Senior Bowl.

DT Pat Sims: Third round. First-round talent, but scouts wonder about attitude.

OT King Dunlap: Fourth round. Has the perfect body for an NFL offensive lineman.

FB Carl Stewart: Fourth round. He's the kind of guy you want for a teammate.

DB Jonathan Wilhite: Sixth round. Big-time talent, but had spotty senior year.

DB Eric Brock: Seventh round. Might be a tweener.

TE Cole Bennett: Seventh round. Big guy who can run and is exceptionally intelligent.

NG Josh Thompson: Free agent. Lack of height will keep him off the big board.

WR Prechae Rodriguez: Free agent. Looks great on the hoof but had limited production at Auburn

Draft Class 2008: FYI, Scout.com preview (subscription requ.)

Scout.com: 2008 Auburn NFL Draft Preview: "Auburn has 11 former players hoping to get their names called on Saturday or Sunday or get picked up as a free agent as the NFL Draft takes place in New York City"

Pat Sims: Persevering from family tragedy to first day pick

By Craig Barnes | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
...Sims, a Dillard graduate, was dealing with the loss of his sister, who died of a heart attack. He also wasn't satisfied with his playing time.

"I needed time to get myself together," Sims said. "I was only 18 when my sister, Vonda, passed away, and we were very close. I was also upset with my situation. I considered transferring."

Sims' 2005 decision has caused some to label him a "risk." He says that decision made him a prospect.

"I wasn't just a more focused player when I came back," Sims said. "I was a changed man. I had a renewed commitment and it paid off."

Sims, entering the draft after his junior season, blossomed into a disruptive force last year. He had 37 tackles, including 11.5 for losses, with 4.5 sacks. It was good enough to be selected first-team All-Southeastern Conference.

His play landed him in a group of defensive tackles behind LSU's Glenn Dorsey, Southern Cal's Sedrick Ellis and North Carolina's Kentwan Balmer. His team visits include the Dolphins and Buccaneers

"I have taken things more seriously since 2005," Sims said. "I've been through a lot of tests and interviews, but they are no different than applying for any job."

Quentin Groves & Takeo Spikes: Competing to fill 49'ers OLB need? Either way, Auburn players fit the bill

If the 49ers choose to go with a linebacker instead, McCloughan said the team is in search of a replacement for Derek Smith, a longtime starter at inside linebacker.

Possibilities at No. 29 could include Tennessee's Jerod Mayo, who ran an impressive 4.54-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. Dan Connor of Penn State is coming off a season in which he was credited with a career-high 145 tackles.

Asked about Quentin Groves, the Auburn outside linebacker the 49ers brought in for a workout earlier this month, McCloughan said: "Size, speed - he's been very productive in the SEC for 3 1/2 years."

• McCloughan said the 49ers are more likely to trade out of the first round than trade up. Either way, the phone is already ringing.

The NFL's push for a more efficient draft means teams are laying the groundwork for trades earlier than ever. There are only 10 minutes between picks this year instead of 15.

McCloughan said he had talked to four teams already and expected to hear from four more by the end of the day. "There's been more contact this year than ever," he said.

• Larry Allen's status remains a mystery. The longtime offensive guard has not made it known whether he will return to the team or retire. A starting job with the 49ers is not assured, but McCloughan said, "If Larry Allen wants to be a 49er, he'll be a 49er. - There's no bad blood."

• Regarding this year's receiver class, McCloughan said: "The quality's good, but I wouldn't say as good as the last two years up top. In the mid-rounds, it's good. You have a chance to get one or two good football players at the receiver position in the mid-rounds."

Discussions with free-agent outside linebacker Takeo Spikes, 31, are on hold until after the weekend. McCloughan said, "We're sitting tight and seeing where the draft goes." Spikes is apparently doing the same, waiting to see which teams still need starters after draft day.

Quentin Groves: Scout mock has him going #29 to 49ers

FOX Sports on MSN - NFL Draft - Scout.com NFL team experts mock draft: "No. 29: 49ers - DE Quentin Groves, Auburn
The 49ers need help along the offensive line and at receiver, but they opt to fill one of their most pressing voids with Auburn's Quentin Groves, a defensive end/linebacker tweener who has the potential to be a force in San Francisco's 3-4 defensive scheme. The 49ers need impact from the position after their edge linebackers recorded just six sacks in 2007. Groves is an intriguing combination of size and speed, running an impressive 4.57-second 40 at the NFL Combine at 259 pounds. And as Auburn's all-time sack leader, he knows how to get to the quarterback. — Craig Massei, SFIllustrated.com"

Quentin Groves: Penner's mock has him going #29 to 49ers

The Bulletin - Philadelphia's Family Newspaper - A Pair Of 'Long Shots' Headline The Bulletin's Mock Draft: "29. 49ers - Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn: Someone needs to tell the Niners it's not illegal to touch the opposing team's quarterback."

Pat Sims: #48 to Bucs or #63 to Patriots?

Groves should get an early call- al.com: "Sims, who left Auburn after his junior year, could be the next Auburn player drafted, although he appears to be on bubble for the first day, when two rounds will be conducted.
Rivals and NFL.com project him to be picked in the middle of the second round, while NFL Draft Countdown says he'll go in the third round to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
NFL Draft Countdown says he'll be selected with the 48th overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons, while Rivals predicts he'll be the 63rd pick by the New England Patriots."

Quentin Groves: Jagnation mock has going #23 to Pittsburg

Scout.com: JagNation.com Staff Mock Draft: "Pittsburgh Steelers- Quentin Groves, DE/OLB, Auburn- The Steelers need to fix both lines, and nobody fits the value of the pick on the offensive line. Groves will fit in well in the Steelers 3-"

Will Herring: Free agents leaving makes room for bigger contribution

HeraldNet: NFL DRAFT: Seahawks have some roster holes to fill: "The Seahawks lost kicker Josh Brown and reserve linebackers Niko Koutouvides and Kevin Bentley in free agency, and long snapper Jeff Robinson is not expected to be back, so now the team has several new areas to address on Day 2 of this weekend's NFL draft.

Brown was one of the most consistent kickers in franchise history, while Kouotouvides and Bentley emerged as leaders on the coverage units.

All three players have possible replacements already on the roster -- veteran kicker Olindo Mare was signed earlier this month, and young linebackers Lance Laury and Will Herring could be ready to make bigger contributions on special teams -- but the voids are likely to be addressed in the draft as well.

The Seahawks also are looking for a long snapper after going through three different snappers during the 2007 season. The latest, 38-year-old Robinson, is not expected to return to the NFL"

Jason Campbell: New coach adjusting throwing & stance mechanics

KFFL Hot off the Wire - NFL news, MLB news and fantasy news: "Jason Reid, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins QB Jason Campbell is making mechanical adjustments in his throwing motion that have helped him during the team's voluntary offseason workout program. Campbell credits head coach Jim Zorn with helping him make these adjustments. Zorn said he has compressed Campbell's stance to give him the opportunity to move laterally quicker than he has in the past."

Campbell scrambles 29 yards vs. Jets

Pat Lee: Late blooming CB rising fast -big & fast plus great senior season and Senior Bowl

AU's Sims and Lee figure to follow Groves in draft- al.com: "Muschamp coached a big cornerback at Auburn - Patrick Lee - another late bloomer who, along with defensive end Quentin Groves, figures to be picked in the first two rounds Saturday.
'He had what you're looking for,' said Muschamp, who didn't know much about Lee upon coming to Auburn from the Miami Dolphins in 2006. 'He hadn't played a lot and didn't have a lot of confidence. As he played and his confidence grew, he got better and better.'
Lee, 6 feet and 200 pounds from Miami, had his best season as a senior in 2007, starting every game and intercepting four passes. NFL scouts began to take notice, and after an effective week at the Senior Bowl, his draft stock was on the rise.
Lee said he'll be happy wherever he's picked.
'We face the best receivers in the SEC,' Lee said. 'Corners that are listed ahead of me don't go against these top guys. I feel like I am underrated. It doesn't matter to me where I go. I just want to play, to go in and do my job.'
Groves is virtually certain to be the first Auburn player picked, but Muschamp said Lee has attributes that NFL teams covet.
'They really like his versatility,' Muschamp said. 'He can match up with a wide receiver and he can play in Cover 2. He has some length and some size and he has speed. The thing is, corners are just hard to find, especially corners with size.'

Post game interview w/AuburnVersus.com

Quentin Groves: Will he fall to 2nd or 3rd round to Eagles?

Solid defense, slim picks shift priorities for Eagles | delawareonline | The News Journal: "This year's draft is rife with hybrid defensive end/linebackers, a position both the Eagles and Ravens like.
The Eagles found linebacker/end Trent Cole in the fifth round in 2005, and he became a Pro Bowl defensive end. Gocong played defensive end in college before converting into a linebacker. And Chris Clemons, signed earlier this offseason to be a situational pass rusher, played both positions in Oakland.
Purdue's Cliff Avril and Auburn's Quentin Groves are considered hybrids who could go in the second or third round. Groves said more NFL teams are going with hybrid linebackers to beef up the pass rush."

Pat Lee: To Detroit in round 3?

Lions unlikely to look at cornerbacks early - Detroit Lions: News, Blogs, Photos, Audio, Schedule & Stats - MLive.com: "Cornerback, though, is a position the Lions are likely to address in the mid to late rounds because they need to develop some young talent. In the third and fourth rounds, there are several players who would fit Detroit's Tampa Two style, including Patrick Lee of Auburn, Chevis Jackson of LSU and DeJuan Tribble of Boston College."

Brandon Cox: Appears to be ending football career

Ledger-Enquirer.com | 04/23/2008 | Tigers test luck in draft: "One name conspicuously absent from Auburn's list of possible draftees is former quarterback Brandon Cox, who didn't join his teammates for a Pro Day workout and appears content to end his career at this point"

The Drive (Tough guy & perhaps the best under pressure QB in AU history)

Jonathan Wilhite: CB receiving plenty of looks

Ledger-Enquirer.com | 04/23/2008 | Tigers test luck in draft: "The Tigers have three more players who will possibly have their name called out this weekend -- tackle King Dunlap, cornerback Jonathan Wilhite and fullback Carl Stewart. All three, if selected, would be chosen in the late rounds.
Dunlap, who lost his starting tackle position midway through the season, will have his work cut out for him to convince teams he's worth selecting. He's been labled an underachiever and will have to overcome that.
Stewart played behind some talented Auburn running backs, but his ability to play fullback and catch the ball out of the backfield could be his ticket to a career in the NFL.
Another player receiving plenty of looks is cornerback Jonathan Wilhite. Health issues have plagued Wilhite, so he'll have to convince teams he can stay healthy.
Auburn players who could be free agent acquisitions include tight end Cole Bennett, safety Eric Brock, receiver Prechae Rodriguez and defensive tackle Josh Thompson -- who led the Tigers with 67 tackles last year.
One name conspicuously absent from Auburn's list of possible draftees is former quarterback Brandon Cox, who didn't join his teammates for a Pro Day workout and appears content to end his career at this point"

Marcus McNeil: Rumors negatively impacted his draft pick

Chargers Confidential | MVN - a San Diego Chargers blog » Blog Archive » With The 27th Pick In The MVN Mock Draft, The San Diego Chargers Will Pick…: "Marcus McNeil slipped based on rumors"

Devin Aromashodu: Intriguing young player for Colts

Colts Couch Crew | MVN - Most Valuable Network » Blog Archive » State of the Colts: The Wide Receivers: "Again, I mention Gonzalez. If Harrison can’t come back and Gonzalez gets banged up, what will the Colts do? What’s left in the cupboard?
Well, there’s Aromashodu. He burst onto the scene in random fashion last season. Seriously, I was watching the Colts get into formation on offense and the camera zoomed in on #80. I follow the team pretty closely and my reaction was, “who in the heck is that guy?” A quick internet search found that Aromashodu spent time with the Houston Texans and went to college at Auburn. Most shockingly, when the divisional playoff game met its late stages, it was “that guy” and not Marvin Harrison who was on the field. Aromashodu didn’t show me a whole lot during the season, but that’s probably because he was signed in November. With a full off-season under his belt, maybe he’ll be more of a contributor."

King Dunlap: Steelers target later in draft

New Era Scouting » Blog Archive » Stretching the Field: On The Line: "The Steelers strongest need is to rebuild the entire offensive line. The team may need to find replacements for the entire left side, and upgrades throughout the unit. Marvel Smith has been a mainstay at left tackle for several seasons, but his health has been an issue. His balky back limited him to 12 games last season. His main backup was former starting right tackle Max Starks, who just signed the team’s $6.9 million a year transition player tender, as backup for both tackle spots. Starks is a bit stiff to play the left side consistently, and in offensive coordinator Bruce Arians’ heavy passing scheme, athleticism is a must. Look for the Steelers to possibly make this a round one selection, should a quicker left tackle like Vanderbilt’s Chris Williams be available at pick 22. If they choose to hold till later in the draft, the team has shown considerable interest in Auburn’s King Dunlap. The Steelers strongest need is to rebuild the entire offensive line. King Dunlap: Draft sleeper with NFL athleticism

NFL Draft has plenty of sleeper prospects - David Gladow - New Orleans Sports: "King Dunlap, OT, Auburn - When dealing with a player that has traditionally underachieved, you're either getting a guy ready to fail ... or one really ready to explode. Dunlap has the unbelievable type of athleticism that can help carry him through any bad stretches he might have, and if he can get a fire-breathing coach to get the maximum out of his potential, he will be a very good one.King Dunlap, OT, Auburn - When dealing with a player that has traditionally underachieved, you're either getting a guy ready to fail ... or one really ready to explode. Carlos Rogers: Will he be on PUP list to first half of season?

For Redskins, There's One More Position - washingtonpost.com: "Some within the organization believe that cornerback Carlos Rogers, a former first-round pick, will spend much of the first half of the season on the physically unable to perform list while continuing to rehab from reconstructive knee surgery"

Quentin Groves: Steelers allude to trading down from #23 pick

Steelers unlikely to trade up in NFL draft - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "For starters, the Steelers aren't in the business of revealing their draft secrets to the rest of the NFL. For another, Colbert said the top of this year's draft remains a mystery.
In fact, Colbert said this draft could be as unpredictable as any in recent memory.
Whether he was referring to trades or teams making surprising picks, Colbert left the door open for several different scenarios leading up to the Steelers' selection at No. 23.
Some of the players who could be on the Steelers' first-round wish list include North Carolina defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer, Boston College tackle Gosder Cherilus, Auburn defensive end/linebacker Quentin Groves, Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart and Oklahoma receiver Malcolm Kelly.
'This is one draft, at this stage, I don't think we've got a handle on a position or one player,' Colbert said. 'Sometimes you can get that feel. But this year I think there's going to be a lot of variables that's going to happen in front of us. We're not going to lock our knees. We'll be very flexible and try to adjust accordingly.'
Refusing to discuss specific players, Colbert said the draft is unusually deep at tackle, with versatile linemen who can play right and left tackle, and others who who can play tackle and guard. The draft is also strong at running back and cornerback, Colbert said.
Colbert said the Steelers won't pass on a player in the first round just because there are other good players at that position"

Chris Gray: Will this be final season?

Seahawks | Scouting the NFL Draft | Seahawks should be able to strengthen line | Seattle Times Newspaper: "Let's just say it once and for all — the Seahawks' offensive line hasn't been the same since Pro Bowl left guard Steve Hutchinson left after the 2005 season. The Seahawks have spent the past two seasons trying to find at least a solid replacement at left guard, and the latest move to that end is the signing of veteran guard Mike Wahle, a former Pro Bowler himself, in free agency.
If Wahle pans out, it will allow the Seahawks to use young Rob Sims as either the starter at right guard or the primary backup to both left and right spots. This offensive line was at its best in 2005, the Super Bowl year, but right guard Chris Gray is approaching 38 and his 16th, and likely final, season. Walter Jones is still the cream of the crop in the NFL at left tackle, but even the invincible begin to wear down some after 11 seasons."

Pat Lee: Questions about top rated CBs may increase draft status

No need to duck coverage guys in NFL draft - The Boston Globe: "Because of the questions with the top corners, the best value might very well be in the second tier of players, among the likes of Auburn's Patrick Lee, Virginia Tech's Brandon Flowers, Oklahoma's Reggie Smith, Iowa's Charles Godfrey, UConn's Tyvon Branch, Colorado's Terrence Wheatley, Indiana's Tracy Porter, Penn State's Justin King, and Southern California's Terrell Thomas"

Cooper Wallace: Down the 49ers depth chart

Nolan, 49ers seek immediate help from draft class: "Tight ends
Who's here: Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Billy Bajema and Cooper Wallace.
Draft needs: The 49ers expect Davis to have a breakout season with Martz devising ways to get the ball in his hands. The 49ers have no needs at this position. Davis has the potential to be explosive in the passing game, and he's a terrific blocker. Walker is a nice receiving threat, while Bajema is a blocking specialistTight ends

Heath Evans: Solid play may mean no RB

As long as the Patriots continue to put up amazing numbers in the passing game, they may not need much more than that Maroney has given them.

Throw in a healthy Sammy Morris, who had two 100-yard games before going out with a collarbone injury, another strong season by versatile third-down back Kevin Faulk and the continued solid play of fullback Heath Evans, and Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli may come to the conclusion that the backfield is in good hands entering the 73rd annual NFL Draft, which begins Sunday. But the Patriots' coach and his trusted personnel lieutenant have always entered drafts looking to improve their team with an eye on the future. The top running backs in this year's draft may be out of their reach at No. 7 in the first round, or not as important to them as other needs, but there's a lot of depth in this year's running back corps - at least 10 worthy of selection in the first 100 picks and plenty more thereafter

Stanley McClover: Panthers looking for starter at DE

Charlotte Observer | 04/19/2008 | Draft could address several Panthers weak areas: "Defensive Line
Remember the days when the defensive line was the pride of the franchise?
Those days are gone. The Panthers barely mustered a pass rush last season and since have bid farewell to Kris Jenkins and -- at least for now -- to long-time starting defensive end Mike Rucker, an unrestricted free agent who remains unsigned.
Carolina is officially in rebuilding mode here and needs an end and a tackle in the draft.
Florida's Derrick Harvey would be a marvelous addition in the first round and would be instantly penciled in as the starter at right end. If he winds up elsewhere, free agent signee Tyler Brayton and 2007 third-round pick Charles Johnson will compete for the job with Stanley McClover.
The Panthers must get some tackle help for starters Damione Lewis and Ma'ake Kemoeatu. They can dream of landing Southern Cal's Sedrick Ellis in the first round, but that's highly unlikely because he figures to be a top-10 pick.
Getting a tackle in the second or third round is feasible, however. One possibility is former Independence High standout Dre Moore of Maryland."

Pat Sims: To Seahawks In Round 2?

Scout.com: Six to Watch for Seahawks: The Second Round: "Pat Sims, DT, Auburn
If Seattle picks up a defensive tackle early in the second, Sims will not be the pick here, however, if they don’t, he’s a very intriguing prospect.
Sims was a standout on a great Auburn team, both as a junior and a senior, and he showed that he could consistently hold his gaps well while also getting a modicum of pressure on the quarterback – 7.5 sacks his final two seasons – when he had the opportunity.
With his low center of gravity Sims would fit in nicely with Brandon Mebane, Rocky Bernard and Craig Terrill to be a rock in the middle of the defense. It’s sad to give up on a player like Marcus Tubbs, but with his injuries, I’d be shocked to see him return in"

Ben Obomanu & Courtney Taylor: Drafting Doucet Puts On The Pressure

Scout.com: Six to Watch for Seahawks: The Second Round: "Doucet doesn’t have elite speed, but he always seems to be running away from players and his excellent hands and crisp routes make him a perfect fit in the west coast offense. He’d complement Bobby Engram, Nate Burleson and Deion Branch (when and if he gets healthy) well and he’s really push the young players like Ben Obomanu and Courtney Taylor for playing time.

Brandon Jacobs: Recent wrist surgery

Fantasy Football Breaking News - Rotoworld.com: "Brandon Jacobs was spotted at Madison Square Garden Saturday wearing a sling on his left arm and a cast on his left hand.
As it turns out, he underwent wrist surgery recently. Jacobs reportedly 'didn't seem to be in pain' while speaking to fans and guaranteed he'll be ready for training camp. Still, his status is uncertain for post-draft camps. Wrist injuries can be problematic for running backs, with Shaun Alexander being an example. Jacobs needs to get healthy. He's in a contract year. Pat Sims: "Relentless & Tough"

Defense, special teams | The Journal Gazette: "Pat Sims, 6-2, 310, Auburn: Relentless and tough, he sometimes gets out of position or confused by misdirection. Shoots into backfield and uses hands well, but footwork is lacking"

Ben Obomanu & Courtney Taylor: Brohm at #25 will have quality young WRs to throw to

Mile High Report :: With The 25th Pick In The MHR Community Mock Draft....: "d) WR such as Devin Thomas and Desean Jackson, as well as DE's like Calais Campbell were strong considerations here but Brohm's value wins out. Seattle has young players at both WR and DE, and they have proven especially adept at developing receivers from later in the draft (DJ Hackett, Courtney Taylor, Ben Obomanu)"

Quentin Groves: Sporting News' Matt Crossman rates as #2 Outside Linebacker

SportingNews.com - Your expert source for NFL Football stats, scores, standings, blogs and fantasy news from NFL Football columnists: "3. Quentin Groves easily is the biggest and fastest among the top-tier OLBs. Why isn't he rated above Keith Rivers?
Simply put, Groves never played to his ability at Auburn. He has elite athleticism but has struggled to recognize plays."

Jason Campbell: No controversy; Washington's his team

Campbell Confident He's Redskins' Future - washingtonpost.com: "There were rumblings Zorn was not committed to Campbell as the starter next season, and Campbell wanted to know where he stood.
Campbell came back from vacation in February and met with Zorn at Redskins Park, hoping for some answers. Campbell said Zorn did much more than he expected.
'He told me it wasn't true. He told me this is my team,' Campbell said after workouts this week at the complex. 'He made it clear that I'm the quarterback the Redskins are going to grow with. He told me that I'm still developing as a young quarterback, but that he thinks I have it all. . . . I have what it takes to take us to where we want to go. That was a confidence-builder.'"

Kendall Simmons: Well regarded in Pittsburg

For every Faneca, there's a bust: "Kendall Simmons, who has been highly serviceable at a couple of positions and part of some of the best offensive lines in Steelers history, also handled the Super Bowl hardware. He was taken with the 30th pick in 2002.
So it can be done."

Quentin Groves: Updated Visits List

Auburn's Groves: Healthy and ready for NFL draft - The Gold Mine - al.com: "Groves has visited Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Cleveland, Miami, New England, ``both of the New Yorks'' and, Friday, he visited the San Francisco 49ers, and found Auburn teammate and draft hopeful Pat Sims there, too."

Ben Grubbs: Alabama's Ozzie Newsome couldn't wait to pick AU player

Changes or not, I'll watch the NFL draft - Evening Sun: "Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome recalled an instance last year why the competition committee and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell changed the rule.
'When we got to our pick with (Ben) Grubbs, we knew we were going to pick Grubbs as soon as our time came on the clock,' Newsome said. 'I waited until there was five minutes to go before I handed the card in. We got some trade calls, but we knew we wanted Grubbs. So when you take that information into account, that's why we wanted to speed it up a little bit.'"

Karlos Dansby: Signs 8M Deal which is average of top 5 NFL linebackers

Cards' Dansby feels 'pretty good' about signing: "Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby officially became $8.065 million richer Thursday, so he has had worse days.

'I feel pretty good about it,' Dansby said.

The $8 million and change is the average of the top five highest-paid linebackers in the NFL. The Cardinals were required to make that offer when they designated Dansby their franchise player in February"

Pat Sims: Athletic 310LB DT was HS basketball champ

NFL Draft Analysis: Defensive line : Pro Football : TCPalm: "Playing hoops
DE Angelo Craig spent the winter of 2005 playing for the University of Cincinnati basketball team. Calais Campbell led the state of Colorado in rebounding as a senior in high school, and Eastern Michigan's James Jones was an all-state basketball selection in suburban Detroit. DT Chris Norwell of Illinois left his Cincinnati high school as its all-time leading scorer and rebounder, and DT Pat Sims started on a basketball team that played for the state championship in Florida. Just about every athletic pass rusher in the NFL draft dreamed of one day playing in the NBA -- but most stopped growing. Sims stopped growing at 6-2 but filled out to 310 pounds. He's still dreaming of basketball. 'Don't let the size fool you,' he said. 'I can shoot, I can handle, I can do everything you need.'"

'The majority of (UT) guys don't come back. We want to create an atmosphere where they want to come back. … Everybody said if they had a reason to come back to Knoxville, they would.'"

Rudi Johnson & Heath Evans: Revisiting the '01 RB draft -they were undervalued

News - Record book draft - Cincinnati Bengals: "All open questions, but one thing is certain: The '01 draft provided a road map for others to follow with a couple of eternal verities about the process:

1. Take The Best Player
After the first day of that draft when the Bengals had taken Smith, Chad Johnson and tight end Sean Brewer (more on that later), two things happened before the Bengals draft room broke up for the night. As they prepared for rounds four to seven the next day, offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski phoned Yarber to get his impressions on Houshmandzadeh as the Bengals lined up their board with the remaining players.

The top player on the list was Auburn running back Rudi Johnson and so the Bengals took him with one of Sunday's first picks in the fourth round even though they took running back Curtis Keaton in the fourth round the year before, they would sign Corey Dillon to a long-term deal a month later, and Brandon Bennett had successfully returned from reconstructive knee surgery.

'We had solid third-round grades on Rudi and we were surprised he was still there,' says director of football operations Jim Lippincott. 'Yeah, we had backs, but you were talking about a guy from a creativity standpoint that had all the things you're looking for in a, NFL running back: Strong. Lateral snap. Great vision. Later, that allowed us to trade Keaton for another pick.'The one thing that was missing, of course, was speed and that's why Johnson was sitting at the top of the fourth and his Auburn teammate, Heath Evans, had gone in the third round to Seattle.

"That surprised me from a football player standpoint," says Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson. "Heath ran faster. But Rudi played fast. He was fast on tape."

Evans is still in the league, but only as a role player. Of the 10 backs drafted ahead of Johnson, only future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson (the fifth pick in the draft) has scored more touchdowns and only Tomlinson and Travis Henry (second round) have more career carries and yards.

Another knock on Johnson was he played just one year of Division I ball before coming out early. But a big selling point to the Bengals was the kind of year he had.

"Dominant. Player of the Year in the SEC," Lippincott says, and Anderson says, "If you're not moving in the SEC, you're a tattoo."

And Anderson saw something else that wasn't in the stats but that he thinks will revive Johnson's career this year:

"He's a very prideful man," he says."

Quentin Groves: Draft Stock steadied/heart surgery "no concern"

FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Expect more dealing than usual ahead of draft day: "Considered a late first-round prospect, Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves is also trying to steady his stock. He sent a letter to all 32 teams following heart surgery March 27 to treat his Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. WPW is an abnormality in the heart's electrical system that can lead to rapid heartbeats if left untreated. Said a source from one team, 'The procedure is effective. There is no concern.'"

Quentin Groves: One if USA Today's top 6 DEs

DRAFT 2008: Profiles of the top players by position - USATODAY.com: "NEW YORK — Notable defensive and special teams players in the NFL draft, grouped by projected NFL positions.
DEFENSIVE ENDS
Position outlook: One of the NFL positions where raw ability can best be shaped, this spot frequently sees some head-scratching picks on draft day, when players with great measurables or workout performances are taken early. There's some real value here this year.
CHRIS LONG, 6-foot-4, 275 pounds, Virginia: A versatile prospect at the position who could be a three-down player due to his array of pass-rush moves and nose for the football. Strong and athletic enough to fight off blocks, his one weak spot is a lack of edge-rush speed. Still, his quickness and anticipation usually are enough for him to overwhelm all but the most massive OLs.
-Vernon Gholston, 6-4, 258, junior, Ohio State: Has the speed to get upfield and past blockers in a hurry, but is less effective against the run. Raw, with plenty of potential to become a top speed rusher or linebacker.
-Derrick Harvey, 6-5, 252, junior, Florida: Quick to read and react, he could be a linebacker project. Either way, he shows excellent acceleration and speed, as well as football IQ.
-Phillip Merling, 6-5, 272, Clemson: Excellent at back-side pursuit, as well as blowing linemen back. Has the proverbial good motor. Struggles when blockers can get into his pads.
-Calais Campbell, 6-8, 282, Miami: Nimble and quick, especially for his size. Quick to react, especially to screens and flares.
-Quentin Groves, 6-3, 250, Auburn: Explosive quickness that could make him a star, but lack of size means he's a tweener project. Potential is there."

Quentin Groves: Excellent Pre-Draft Analyses Piece (projecting 1st round to Jags)

Big Cat Country :: Better Know a Draft Prospect: Defensive End Quentin Groves: "Why Quentin? He's fast, deadly fast, with a relentless desire to crush quarterbacks or hit running backs. He brings speed to the table that the Jaguars have lacked on their defensive line and is the equivalent of a guided missile in the pass rush. Drafting Quentin means that every down he's on the field is a chance for a hit on the quarterback, though with some liability in the running game. Should he prove himself a threat, he should start to see double teams, hopefully opening someone else up on the defensive line for some intense quarterback pressure"

Will Herring: 13 special teams tackles was 3rd on team in '07

NFL Draft Preview: Seconds, anyone? Day 2 draft picks key to success: "How the Seahawks got some of their picks might be a little convoluted. How they settle on the players they select with these picks remains the same.
'You want to be able to get guys that can do something for you on special teams,' club president Tim Ruskell said. 'That's the best road to be able to make the team. If they shine on special teams, they can make the 53-man roster.'
Like linebacker Will Herring, a fifth-round pick last year who finished third on the club with 13 special teams tackles. Like since-departed middle linebacker Niko Koutouvides, a fourth-round pick in 2004 that led the team with 16 coverage tackles as a rookie.
But while a player's performance on special teams is a sure foot-in-the-door maneuver, the real key is getting a player who can develop into a starter -- or at least a significant role player.
'Obviously, you want to pick players that somewhere down the line could be starters,' Ruskell said. 'But usually the track that gets them on the team is the special teams factor.'"

Kendall Simmons: Worth his #30 pick in 2002

Scout.com: Boom and bust: 30 years of No. 30 picks: "2002: Pittsburgh — Kendall Simmons, G, Auburn. Missed all of 2004 season, but has started 46 of 48 games the last three years"

Brandon Jacobs: Hidden gem in draft

DRAFT 2008: In draft, hype is the only sure thing - USATODAY.com: "Jacobs is another example of 'you never know' - a third-string running back behind Cadillac Williams and Brown at Auburn who transferred to Southern Illinois to get playing time."

Pat Sims: One of USA Today's top DTs

DRAFT 2008: Profiles of the top players by position - USATODAY.com: "DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Position outlook: A decent amount of talent, though teams tend to draft this position based on scheme, so one team's must-have player could be way down another team's board.
GLENN DORSEY, 6-2, 316, LSU: Explosive and violent, he makes up for lack of size with his strength and energy. Astonishingly quick off the ball, and strong. Quick to diagnose plays and find the ball. Demands attention from blockers, but production could be limited. Also some durability issues.
-Sedrick Ellis, 6-1, 305, Southern Cal: Sudden off the ball, he can disrupt plays before they develop. Good at sniffing out the ball and pursuing. Probably not ideal for a two-gap scheme.
-Pat Sims, 6-2, 310, Auburn: Relentless and tough, he sometimes gets out of position or confused by misdirection. Shoots into backfield and uses hands well, but footwork is lacking.
-Andre Fluellen, 6-2, 285, Florida State: Penetration is his forte, as befitting an undersized but strong prospect. Needs to work on stuff like pad level, hands, and adding as much strength as he can.
-Marcus Harrison, 6-3, 310, Arkansas: Lots of potential, especially as a run-stuffer, but lots of issues, too. Questions regarding durability, desire and some off-field stuff.
-Kentwan Balmer, 6-5, 298: Good off the snap, and shows impressive ability when the effort is there. Possible underachiever, though, or could just be a project."

Ben Grubbs: Honorable mention as one of Baltimore's best draft picks ever

Music City Miracles :: With the 16th Pick in the MCM Draft: "While the Cards do have need for a corner with A.Rolle moving to Safety, they have a halfway descent starter in E.Green and a very solid Corner in Rod Hood. There is no CB available with near the value that Stewart brings at this pick"

Karlos Dansby: Signing 1yr 8M deal with Arizona

Cards' Dansby to sign 1-year deal: "Cardinals inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, the team's franchise player, plans to sign his one-year tender offer within the next few days, according to NFL sources.
Once Dansby signs, the $8.065 million tender becomes guaranteed.
Dansby's agent, Kirk Wood, has been seeking a multi-year deal for more than a year, and the two sides have talked intermittently since the Cardinals placed the franchise tag on Dansby in February.
But talks have gone nowhere, and Dansby apparently plans to sign the tender. The Cardinals and Dansby have until July 15 to reach a multi-year deal. If they don't meet that deadline, Dansby can't sign a new contract until after the 2008 season.

Pat Sims: Goes to Titans at #43?

Cat Scratch Reader: SBN Mock Draft 2nd Round: "The SBN Mock Draft is now progressed through the 38th pick so I thought it time to put up a poll to see who my readers think I should select next. You can see who has already been selected in the left sidebar at Mocking the Draft. I selected OT Ryan Clady in the 1st round so OT is taken care of. I really think the Panthers need the best available DT with this pick and was hoping Kentwan Balmer would continue to fall. Unfortunately the Falcons just scooped him up at #37. There should still be a couple good DT's at the #43 slot, such as Maryland's Dre Moore and Auburn's Pat Sims."

Quentin Groves: Super Athleticism & Versatility vs Gholston

SportingNews.com - Your expert source for NFL Football stats, scores, standings, blogs and fantasy news from NFL Football columnists: "Gholston vs. Groves
You can bet Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston is a popular subject in draft meetings, but someone in each team meeting is also likely to fight for the growing value of Auburn's Quentin Groves, a very athletic outside pass rusher in his own right.
Groves is climbing on draft boards because of his super athleticism. Although Groves isn't as big and as 'pretty looking' as Gholston, the talk among NFL observers is that Groves is more fluid, which gives him more versatility. Gholston is viewed primarily as a 3-4 rush linebacker who could also be used as a 4-3 end, but he isn't ideal for that latter spot and would also struggle to play linebacker in a 4-3. Groves, meanwhile, has the edge-rushing skills to line up as a 4-3 end, and with his athleticism, he can also excel as a 3-4 outside linebacker or a 4-3 strongside linebacker.
There is little doubt this late in the process that Gholston will be drafted ahead of Groves, but there is a groundswell of support -- including from the War Room -- for Groves turning out to be the better NFL player."

Quentin Groves: Mock Draft going to JAX at #26

Welcome to Comcast SportsNet: "26. Jacksonville: Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn, 6-3/250
With DT Marcus Stroud off to Buffalo and DE Bobby McCray to the Saints the Jags will need to find more playmakers along the defensive front four. Groves is coming off heart surgery this off-season, but assures teams he is good to go. When healthy, Groves brings quickness and the ability to get pressure on the QB. He most likely won’t be an every-down player, but in a draft devoid of quality pass rushers Groves’ skill is hard to pass on."

Spencer Johnson: Upside & adding quality to the D-line

WNY Sports Zone Bills Outlook for 2008 Improved as Draft Looms: "The Bills also signed unrestricted free agent DT Spencer Johnson from the Minnesota Vikings, and he's just 26 with some upside, and should help give the Bills quality depth on the interior of the d-line."

King Dunlap: To Seattle? Great long-term upside

Field Gulls :: The stupidest name in smart Seahawks analysis: "7. King Dunlap, OT, Auburn: Ruskell's taste in offensive linemen tends towards the toolsy. The 6'9' Dunlap started 13 games his junior season at Auburn, but was benched in favor of true freshman Ryan Pugh his senior season. Dunlap won't be expected to do anything his first season, perhaps his first few seasons, and gets to attend left tackle school taught by headmaster Walter Jones. Jones is one of the greatest left tackles in the history of the NFL, though that doesn't mean he can teach another, it does mean Dunlap will learn from the best the kind of hard work and dedication it takes to succeed in the NFL. A practice squad player with incredible upside."

Rob Bironas: Working out in Tennessee

Murfreesboro and Rutherford County news from The Daily News Journal - www.dnj.com - Murfreesboro, Tenn.: "Working out: Titans tackle David Stewart, kicker Rob Bironas, cornerback Reynaldo Hill and safety Vincent Fuller have all signed waivers allowing them to participate in the team’s offseason-conditioning program.

Ben Obomanu: Selma's role model for academic & athletic success

www.kansascity.com | 04/14/2008 | U.S. Excerpts: Selma’s benchmark; raid on Texas ranch: "Selma’s benchmark
From The Selma (Ala.) Times-Journal
Every city wants to be known for something. It usually turns out that an event, a cash crop, and industry or a person is the cornerstone upon which an area’s reputation is built.
Selma is the benchmark as far as athletes that are produced in the state. Today, young kids have pro athletes like Ben Obomanu to look up to, not because he is playing in the NFL, but because he excelled as a student on the way there.
Sports are some of, if not the biggest sub-cultures in our society. They unite people who think they have no business being side by side. Anthony Mix: Getting a shot in Washington

Redskins are in the Mix - - Breaking News, Political News & National Security News - The Washington Times: "'I want to take a hard look at Anthony because of his size,' said new coach Jim Zorn, whose West Coast offense functions best with at least one big target. 'He didn't get to do a lot last year. Maybe he didn't get an opportunity because he was young. I want to take a hard look at who [all] these guys are and how they fit into our system.'

That kind of comment from his boss excites the 25-year-old Mix, who signed Nov. 20 after a year and a half on the New York Giants' practice squad. Mix has been waiting a long time for a chance to show what he can do after starting just 11 games in college and being stuck behind the likes of Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer in New York.

'It makes me feel good to hear that Coach Zorn is depending on me,' said Mix, who played three years at Auburn with Redskins starting quarterback Jason Campbell. 'I've always worked hard because I came in pretty much at the bottom as a rookie free agent, but it motivates you to work even harder. I just want to play, whatever my role is. I like Coach Zorn's offense. It's pretty similar to what we ran at Auburn.'"

Rudy Johnson, Kenny Irons: Injury update

News - Draft Q and A - Cincinnati Bengals: "Since he can't get on the field in May and June, Kenny Irons could be closer to PUP than training camp. And there has been no word about Chris Perry. Rudi Johnson insists he's over the hamstring problems that limited him to 2.9 yards per carry last year, but even before he got hurt he has averaged 3.5 yards per carry since 2006."

Takeo Spikes: Helping TN linebacker prepare for draft

Scout.com: Bills Notebook: Interested in a Linebacker?: "Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo has been working out with two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes in preparation of the NFL Draft, the Boston Globe reports. Spikes, of course, was part of Marv Levy’s veteran spring cleaning a year ago, and left on not-so-good terms"

Patrick Lee: Going to Buffalo in round 2?

Buffalo Rumblings :: SBNation NFL Mock Draft, Round Two: Bills On The Clock: "Patrick Lee, CB, Auburn: One of the fastest risers this off-season, Lee has terrific size (6'0', 200 pounds), plays a physical brand of football, and is athletic enough to play in any defense. His style of play is best suited to a Tampa 2, however. He, like most other corners considered here, is a bit raw and does not exit college with much starting experience. But the Bills need depth at corner in a bad way, and Lee could develop into a fine starter without having pressure on him to start from Day One."

2004 Undefeated Tigers Were Loaded With Proven NFL Stars & Pro-Bowlers

These days, football recruiting season never ends - Tracking the Tigers - al.com: "Just out of curiosity and because I know there's always an appetite for football talk out there, I decided to see how highly ranked the recruiting classes were that made up Auburn's unbeaten 2004 team.

According to Scout.com, Auburn recruiting was rated No. 11 in 2002, No. 16 in 2003 and No. 31 in 2004. I couldn't find a full rankings list for 2000 and 2001, but I did find a Sports Illustrated top 10 lists for those two years that did not include Auburn. So, as best I can tell, that team did not include a single top 10 recruiting class.
What it did include was four players - Jason Campbell, Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown and Carlos Rogers - who were drafted in the first round the following spring. It included Marcus McNeil, who would play in the Pro Bowl as a rookie after being drafted in the second round, and Ben Grubbs, who was a first-round pick in 2007. If Quentin Groves goes in the first round this year, that will be another one. Numerous other players from that team are on NFL rosters. In short, the 2004 Tigers had great talent, recruiting class rankings notwithstanding"

David Irons: Good value pick for Atlanta in 2007 draft

New Era Scouting » Inside the War Room: NFC South: "- Comments: The Falcons got more production from their second round picks than they did from first-round pick Jamaal Anderson. Anderson, like many other defensive ends, struggled in his first year, recording just 30 tackles and no sacks. Second-round picks Justin Blalock and Chris Houston, however, are likely to be long-term starters for the Falcons. Laurent Robinson finished with 37 catches for 437 yards. Quentin Groves: Minor Surgery Not Effecting Draft Status

The NFL Source | MVN - an NFL and pro football blog » Blog Archive » 49er’s Like Groves: "According to the Sacramento Bee, the 49er’s don’t believe that former Auburn outside linebacker Quentin Groves will suffer from any long-term effects from the minor heart surgery he had in May.
His agent, Sean Kiernan, explains why:
”An (electrocardiogram) taken seven days after surgery shows he is completely normal. He no longer has (the syndrome), and there are no long-term ramifications to this condition.”
Sounds good to me, but then again, I’m not a doctor.
Groves seems to be a perfect fit for San Francisco at pick twenty-nine. Tully Banta-Cain, the current weak-side starter, is no longer liked by the organization, and in result, they would like to cut or bench him. Groves would allow this to happen.
The all-time Auburn sack leader can also play defensive end, but they would use him at Cain’s spot. He’s a very big guy, but excels at rushing the passer. This is what the 49er’s defense badly needs, even with the signing of Justin Smith.
So, you’d definetely have the think that Groves is whom San Francisco wants for now, especially if they think he’s fully healthy. They’ll also look at some receiver options, as DeSean Jackson and Malcolm Kelley will be visiting. However, look for them to go the defensive route instead, as they can get more value by picking a receiver in round number two."

Quentin Groves & Pat Sims: Mock Draft Groves at 29(1st) & Sims at 42(2nd)

Giants 101 | MVN - a New York Giants blog » Blog Archive » 4/13/08 Mock Draft: "29. San Francisco 49ers (via IND)- Quentin Groves DE Auburn
San Francisco has done a good job this off-season adding some good players in Issac Bruce, Justin Smith and Antonio Bryant. Even though they added two good WR’s from division rivals they still might be in need of a WR, but there is not one worth this pick available. The 49ers also need a pass rushing 3-4 OLB and thats a position that Groves could excel in."

Quentin Groves: Mock Draft going 23 to Pittsburg

HeraldNet: Dolphins are on the clock: "23. PITTSBURGH. Alan Faneca bolted for the Jets and a $21 million guarantee. So another guard, Branden Albert of Virginia, is a popular choice, but Quentin Groves, DE-LB, Auburn, fits this year's pass rusher theme"

Pat Sims: Visits Dolphins

Riley puts priority on finding a center - 04/13/2008 - MiamiHerald.com: "• Although the Dolphins want to get younger, ESPN analyst and retired receiver Keyshawn Johnson, still mulling a comeback, said by phone, ''I'm pretty sure if I wanted to come to Miami, Bill Parcells would say OK.'' . . . Add Auburn defensive tackle Pat Sims and Georgia Tech linebacker Philip Wheeler to the prospects who have been invited to visit the Dolphins."

Quentin Groves: Minor Heart Surgery

Sports Digest- al.com: "AUBURN -- Former Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves underwent minor heart surgery last month, but the procedure isn't expected to affect his status in the April 26 NFL draft.
Groves sent a letter to every NFL team explaining the situation, according to the NFL Network, which first reported the news."

Jay Ratliff: Steal for Dallas in 2005 Draft Class

ESPN - In a dreary draft class, the NFC East shines - NFL: "Dallas Cowboys
This draft class has really built the foundation for what they have become today, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Ware, along with San Diego's Shawne Merriman, are the two best players in this draft class. DE Marcus Spears has underachieved at times, but is a good starter. Day 2 picks RB Marion Barber, DE Chris Canty and NT Jay Ratliff were steals."

Quentin Groves: Scheduled pre-draft visits

Harris: Groves, Steelers strike chord - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "The Steelers' feeling about Groves is apparently mutual. And the Steelers have plenty of company.
Groves is also scheduled to visit Cleveland, Cincinnati, Miami, San Francisco, New Orleans, New England, the Giants and Jets.
Give or take Ohio State's Vernon Gholston, a likely top-10 selection, Groves is considered the best defensive end/outside linebacker in the April 26-27 draft.
In case you missed coach Mike Tomlin's memo, the Steelers, who have the No. 23 overall pick, could use another pass rusher off the edge."

AU vs. Kansas State: Groves Sack & TD

Cadillac Williams: Injury recovery

Doubters Give Fuel To Dunn: "It's a backfield that is badly in need of depth. That was obvious Tuesday, when it became clear that Cadillac Williams remains a long way from rejoining his teammates on the practice field. While Dunn and most of the rest of the Bucs were going through their first organized workout on one field, Williams was working out two fields over under the watchful eye of a Bucs trainer.
Williams did some light running, then amped up his workout by strapping a harness to his chest and pulling the trainer behind him in an effort to build strength in his surgically repaired right patellar tendon.
It was painfully obvious, though, that Williams' return to regular team activity is a long way off. It even may be this time next year before he can realistically attempt a comeback, so Dunn clearly fills a great need.
'I try to push him because he's key,' Dunn said of Williams, 'but it's going to take him some time to get back into football shape. As for myself, I'm just trying to get acclimated again.'"

Dolphins look beyond top draft pick - 04/09/2008 - MiamiHerald.com: "The Dolphins, who are making linebacker a priority, are bringing in Auburn's Quentin Groves, a potential second-rounder with 26 career sacks, and UNLV's Beau Bell, a potential third-rounder. (FYI: Miami requested more tape of Georgia's Marcus Howard and has closely studied several potential second-round linebackers, including Oklahoma's Curtis Lofton, USC end/linebacker Lawrence Jackson, Purdue's Cliff Avril and Tennessee's Jerod Mayo, although none of those five was booked for visits.)"

Ranking the Running Game Pt. 32: Kansas City Chiefs | Bleacher Report: "The Chiefs don’t have a need to draft running back in this draft. The Chiefs need to rebuild their offensive line and in the 1stround hope Jake Long falls to them or go after Ryan Clady. It would be wise to spend two or three choices in the draft on the Offensive line. Ty Law was cut making the need for a cornerback bigger; the need can be filled with Auburn’s Patrick Lee. Ben Grubbs (OG), Baltimore

Carroll County Times: Westminster, Maryland: "Drafted in the first round last year out of Auburn, Grubbs started a dozen games at right guard and drew some all-rookie notice. He’s capable of tracking down linebackers downfield and anchoring against big defensive tackles.

“Ben Grubbs is going to be pretty good,” said Harbaugh, who was also complimentary of Marshal Yanda’s work during 12 starts at right tackle."

Jason Campbell (QB), Washington

"Jason's in for a lot of different thoughts of how to get rid of the ball in rhythm, how to understand how fast the game is played," Zorn said. "Jason's going to have to develop over several years. The thing we've got to do is make sure that we don't give him so much that he can't function. ... I don't want him to have to think all through training camp, 'Woe is me. I have to learn a whole 'nother system. I have to be with a bunch of new guys.' "

Zorn said the 6-foot-5, 233-pound Campbell has "excellent" feet.

"A lot of quarterbacking is change of direction," said Zorn, an NFL quarterback for 10 years. "You might have to throw on the move inside the pocket. It's not standing there stoically waiting for somebody to come open. It's getting back, getting forward, and once you step forward, the ball should be gone. Those things are going to help him to be on board when the onslaught of the offense comes in."

NFL approves several rules - 04/03/2008 - MiamiHerald.com: "• Giants coach Tom Coughlin raved about linebacker Reggie Torbor, who was signed by the Dolphins last month. Anthony Mix (WR), Redskins

Hog Heaven | MVN - Most Valuable Network » Blog Archive » I’m cool with Vinny Cerrato…: "Marcus Mason is a hidden gem on the practice squad. I have a palpable fear that some team with do to us what we did to the Giants with Anthony Mix. That’s to snap Marcus Mason up and run away with him. Mason is our Rock Cartwright insurance policy. He can fill Rock’s spot if necessary and provides a lot of depth at running back."

Carlos Rogers (CB), Washington

Hog Heaven MVN - Most Valuable Network » Blog Archive » Carlos Rogers: “X” Factor, Revisited: "His knee injury in Week 8 against New England ended all that optimism. It was very serious, a torn ACL and MCL, and Rogers’ recovery is supposed to take 12 months.
That means that he will likely begin the season on the PUP list as a precautionary measure. Fans can expect Rogers to return to the lineup at some point in October, and add strength to the depth at CB.
The question is whether or not he will be a starter when he gets back. Carlos was on track in his development, but unlike Rocky McIntosh, his injury happened at a very critical time for his development. If he can’t come back and establish himself as a starter in October, Rogers may in effect lose his 2008 season to injury, even if he contributes with depth."

Carter To Remain With Bucs | Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Pewter Report: "The Bucs used some of that cap room to help improve their defensive line by signing free agent defensive ends Jimmy Wilkerson and Marques Douglas, who previously played for Kansas City and San Francisco, respectively.

Wilkerson and Douglas will compete with Carter, Gaines Adams, Greg White, Patrick Chukwurah, Charles Bennett and Marquies Gunn for playing time and/or roster spots this year. Ronnie Brown (RB), Miami

Ronnie Brown to share Dolphins' backfield with Ricky Williams -- Health, Miami Dolphins, Chris Liwienski -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com: "Dolphins coach Tony Sparano appears to be a believer in the two-back system the NFL has been moving toward the past couple of seasons, which means Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams will be asked to share carries this season.

'In our league, you're seeing less and less of that one back, that [one] guy doing it all the time,' Sparano said. 'I mean you can look around the league and really see that's something that doesn't last very long because of injury, and because of how good the other people are.'

Sparano pointed out he needs to learn how Brown, who rushed for 605 yards and averaged 5.1 yards before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in late October, and Williams, who suffered a season-ending chest injury in the one game he played after returning from his prolonged NFL suspension, complement each other."

Jason Campbell (QB), Washington

The Wonderlic test is a 12 minute, 50 question exam that NFL teams use to measure intelligence and other decision making factors. But what does this have to do with running and throwing anyway?

NFL scouts will tell you that this score can measure a player's quick decision making ability, while others feel it may be out-dated for today's player. According to the experts the average score for a football player is around 20 and a score of 10 means you're barely literate.

It's too early to examine the 2007 class of QB's, but a quick note, Brady Quinn of the Cleveland Browns scored a 29 and JaMarcus Russell scored a 24. Both are above the average but haven't played enough yet to evaluate.

Just look at some of the other scores from the past and how the player has performed on the field: Matt Leinart and Kellen Clemens both scored a 35, both scores are higher then the average score of a Chemist and both have performed poorly on the field. Compare those two to Jay Cutler, who scored a 26 and has been head and shoulders above that QB class.

From the 2005 class, Alex Smith scored a 40, Aaron Rodgers a 35, and Kyle Orton a 26. With the exception of Rodgers, both Smith and Orton have not lived up to expectations. We'll find out how Rodgers does for Green Bay as he takes over for the retired Brett Favre.

From the same QB class Jason Campbell of the Redskins scored a 23 and Derek Anderson of the Browns scored a 19. Both have been the best in their respective class with Anderson exceeding anyone's wildest expectations.

From the 2004 testing Eli Manning had the highest at 39 while J.P. Losman and Matt Schaub both scored a 31. But the lowest score of all the top QB's was Ben Roethlisberger at 25. While Eli just won the Super Bowl, the best player from this draft has easily been Big Ben.

Just to prove that this score is not the end-all-be-all for QB's, the three headed monster of Rex Grossman, Brooks Bollinger, and Kyle Boller all scored higher then Carson Palmer. The point is obvious, while this test may move some players up the draft board, it shouldn't keep the scouts from doing what they do best.
